SEXUAL ABUSE
Treating sexual abuse requires specialized training and experience. The effects of sexual abuse can be subtle or devastating. The impact of sexual abuse often morphs in concert with a survivor's development, stressors and milestones. Survivors may present with symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress, anxiety, depression, or problems in developing trusting, egalitarian relationships. Statistics on the occurrence of sexual abuse vary greatly, but researchers agree that it is widespread and devastating.
Regardless of its prevalence, survivors often feel alone. Therapy can help survivors to clarify and normalize the impact of the abuse, improve communication in relationships, and manage symptoms of anxiety, depressions, and Post-traumatic Stress. A key element of recovery is helping survivors to truly understand that they are not to blame for the abuse. This can be hard work for the therapist and client alike.
I have evaluated and treated hundreds of victims of childhood sexual abuse as a designated specialist for the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families. I also treat adult survivors of sexual abuse. I continue to accept a limited number of referrals for the treatment and evaluation of sexual abuse.
