The Science of Psychotherapy The science of psychotherapy has to do with sorting through all the great theories, studies and case examples by all the wonderful people who have contributed to the field and learning what works for whom. Even there, studies have shown that a collaborative and trusting relationship between the therapist and the client is often the most important factor in reaching therapeutic goals. That being said, cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT has been shown through hundreds of studies to be highly effective in treating anxiety, depression and even relationship issues. For that reason, and because of the hundreds of people I have helped through CBT, I often present that as an option for the treatment of anxiety and depression. However, cognitive therapy is not right for everyone and no one therapy works for all people. Therefore, I am glad to use whatever does work for a given individual. Most seasoned therapists draw from and combine a variety of treatment models. You and I will decide together what treatment method is most appropriate for you. |
